Cambridge Children’s Hospital

Cambridge Children's Hospital concept

Cambridge Children’s Hospital will be the first hospital designed to truly provide mental and physical health care together, delivered by staff who are trained in both. The new hospital will be the first specialist children’s hospital for the East of England, the only region in the UK currently without one.

A partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH), Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) and the University of Cambridge, this hospital is being co-designed with the help of children, young people, families and healthcare professionals across the region. It is planned to be built opposite the Rosie Maternity Hospital, on the corner of Robinson Way and Dame Mary Archer Way in the southeast corner of the current Campus. Wherever possible, facilities will be integrated, recognising that many children and young people with mental health conditions also have a physical health condition, and vice versa. This will enable staff to provide better and safer, age-appropriate care in high quality, fit for purpose facilities that meet the needs of children, young people and families.

Housing a University of Cambridge research institute focused on the prevention and early diagnosis of disease, the hospital will deliver game-changing advances in life sciences and paediatric research. Bringing researchers and clinicians together in one place will create a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment, dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people.

It will also have its own school, space for a dedicated classroom and teaching facilities so children do not miss out on their education, which is essential for every young person’s development.

Status

Cambridge Children’s Hospital is now proceeding to the final stage of its business case development.

Full planning permission was granted in March 2022, after children and young people helped develop the early designs.

A programme of pre-construction works is now complete and new access roads have been installed opposite the Rosie Maternity Hospital, where the new five-storey, 35,000 sqm hospital will be built.

The project team will soon be appointing a construction partner and construction works for the main hospital building is set to begin late 2025, early 2026.

The hospital build will be complete sometime in early 2029.
