Supporting a Smoke-Free Cambridge Biomedical Campus

This page is under construction

Our campus is a smoke-free site, which means smoking is not allowed in any shared spaces.

The campus is currently updating the Smoke-free policy for the site. This will be launched later in 2026.

We want the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to be a safe and healthy place for everyone who works, studies, visits, or receives care here. We also want to support staff, patients, and visitors who want to stop smoking by helping them find stop smoking services and support.

Reducing smoking across the campus supports a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive environment for everyone. Supporting people to quit is part of our shared mission to improve health outcomes, reduce inequality, and create a workplace where wellbeing comes first.

Get Support to Stop Smoking

There’s no single right way to quit, but there’s plenty of free, expert help available to guide you. People who use a stop smoking service are up to three times more likely to quit for good than those who try alone.1

The following resources might be helpful for you:

  • NHS Quit Smoking Helplines: trained, expert advisers available for free on 0300 123 1044 or webchat.

Access to Stop Smoking Aids

There are different stop smoking aids that can help reduce cravings. These include nicotine products such as patches, gum or sprays, stop smoking medications such as varenicline and vapes which are available for free through some stop smoking service. Some aids are prescribed by a doctor or stop smoking specialist, and some can be bought at a pharmacy. Please talk to a doctor, nurse or pharmacies before using any stop smoking aid. If you are in hospital, tell staff you are using any of these.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is available on prescription from general practitioners or via smoking cessation specialist healthcare professionals. It can also be purchased ‘over the counter’ from all community pharmacies. Patients are requested to check with their clinician before using NRT. All patients admitted using NRT products should have this noted on the inpatient prescription chart.

Hospital patients

Patients attending Cambridge University Hospitals or Royal Papworth Hospital can access smoking cessation support during their visit or stay. Please speak to a member of staff, who can refer you to the specialist Treating Tobacco Dependency team for advice, medication, and ongoing support.
