A free, temporary, coach service for Campus staff to ease journeys to and from our site at peak times has launched.

Cambridge Biomedical Campus Limited (CBC Ltd) has announced the temporary, free, coach shuttle service to make commuting easier for staff coming to and from Cambridge Train Station and the Trumpington Park and Ride at peak times.

There are two new routes, which will operate in peak times, Monday – Friday, from Monday 2nd February: the CBC01 service will connect the Campus to Cambridge Train Station whilst the CBC02 will make journeys to and from the Trumpington Park and Ride.

The coaches are being provided by CBC Ltd, a non-profit partnership of many of the main health, research, life science and education organisations on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, which is the largest centre of medical research and health science in Europe, with funding support from its members.

Ed Watson, Interim Managing Director of CBC Ltd, said:

“We realise that journeys by public transport have been challenging recently, and we hope journeys can be made easier for all with these additional coach services. We encourage anyone travelling to our Campus to do so by walking, cycling or public transport, and by providing this additional sustainable travel option for staff, we are also freeing up capacity in the public services for patients and visitors to have easier journeys.”

The services are free for all staff who work for CBC Ltd’s members, just show your staff pass to the driver:

  • Abcam
  • AstraZeneca
  • Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust
  • The MRC Lab of Molecular Biology
  • Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • University of Cambridge

The provision of Campus Staff Shuttles is expected to run until May 1st 2026, when we expect a reduction in the disruptions from the works on the Busway services and, shortly thereafter, the opening of Cambridge South Train Station.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this needed?

A combination of factors, which includes disruption caused by the Guided Busway safety improvements and the delay to the planned opening of Cambridge South Train Station, which have limited the options and capacity of public transport options to access the Campus, and so CBC Ltd members and campus partners have come together to provide a solution. The additional provision of coaches for staff, on a temporary basis, means there is more capacity on existing bus services for patients and visitors.

Why only staff?

We understand that there are currently acute pressures on public transport and that patients and visitors need reliable journeys to get to and from our Campus. We hope that these additional temporary services will free up space on the public transport network, whilst ensuring our staff can get to work and play their pivotal roles in delivering world-class healthcare and breakthrough life sciences discoveries.

CBC Limited’s Travel and Transport Plan supports sustainable public transport options and includes numerous measures to help visitors and patients get to and from the Campus, as well as our staff. This reflects our understanding of the importance of our entire Campus community in having access to public transport.
