Transport initiatives on Campus

Bus stop on Cambridge Biomedical Campus Bus stop on Cambridge Biomedical Campus

Major transport projects, enabling more sustainable journeys to Cambridge Biomedical Campus, are moving ahead. However, we know that much-needed transport schemes can have short term impacts on traffic, roads and public transport.

This is why CBC Ltd is working closely with landowners, employers, local authorities and transport and construction companies to communicate and coordinate activities to give people as much information as possible and reduce any negative impacts.

Updates on current projects and the service implications for campus users can be found below, along with where to find more information and live updates. The page will be updated regularly, but you can also subscribe to our newsletter to get updates in your inbox.

We know that our community’s ability to get to, from and across the Campus is absolutely vital to the effective delivery of the world-class science and health provision which we are so proud of.  We also need to ensure that the Campus is a well-connected part of the rest of the city and the wider region.

You can also find our more about our Travel and Transport Plan here, which is managed through our Travel and Transport Group for the Campus.

Cambridge South Train Station

Network Rail and project partners are delivering Cambridge South station on the western edge of the Campus to provide direct rail access to the hospitals, research facilities and businesses. The station is being fitted with substantial cycle parking and will provide step-free access.

Greater Anglia will be operating the station and have been providing engagement with the campus and its local communities. There will be further engagement events to come in the Spring.

Network Rail are providing regular updates here but you can also find further information, including an FAQ about the station and what to expect when it opens here.

What to expect: From June 2026 – new platforms, regular stopping services and improved links to the city and region. Facilities designed to prioritise walking, cycling and public transport access.

Cambridge South East Transport (CSET)

A new guided busway route to and from the Campus

CSET will provide a new, dedicated guided busway from the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC) to a travel hub located near to the A1307/A11/A505 road junction southeast of the village of Babraham, with three proposed intermediate bus stops along the route at Great Shelford, Stapleford and Sawston. A path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders will run alongside the busway.

A new Travel Hub, containing 1,250 car parking spaces, plus spaces for coaches, motorcycles and drop-off, will provide a Park & Ride (P&R) facility for journeys to and from both Cambridge city centre and the Campus, improving public transport accessibility for communities and commuters.

As the scheme is progressing through statutory stages, more details and regular updates, including on the public enquiry, will be available here.

What to expect: As the project progresses, we expect a programme of road, bus, walking and cycling improvements making travel to the Campus easier and quicker. More details will be shared when plans for any works which affect the Campus are scheduled.

Passenger boarding autonomous Connector bus

Connectorautonomous bus trials coming to campus

Connector is an autonomous bus trial operating three fully electric self-driving buses in Cambridge being led by Greater Cambridge Partnership. It started in June 2025 covering Cambridge West, and they are rolling out two more autonomous buses to serve the campus with routes to and from Trumpington park & ride, Babraham Road park & ride and the Campus.

A safety driver, or ‘bus pilot’ will be on board at all times during the trials. The buses will be free for all passengers to use during the trial, which is due to run until at least March 2026.

The trial route will start at the Trumpington park & ride and stop at:

  • Bishop’s Road (Shelford Road),
  • Addenbrookes Road (Hobson Avenue)
  • Addenbrookes Road (Whittle Avenue),
  • Francis Crick Avenue
  • Robinson Way (Rosie Maternity Unit)
  • Addenbrooke’s Outpatients
  • Hills Road (Red Cross Lane)
  • Babraham park & ride.

It then takes the same journey in reverse.

What to expect: From December 2025, see and jump on trial services of cutting-edge automated buses linking the campus to the park & rides sites

Guided Busway safety works

Cambridgeshire County Council has implemented a programme of safety improvements on the Guided Busway. Works include phased installation of fencing and safety barriers and some temporary speed reductions while works progress; the programme will be delivered in phases and is being publicised on the County Council pages here, where you can sign up to receive a newsletter from the County on the busway works direct to your inbox. You can also report raise any safety concerns and report near misses directly. Guided busway information and updates are available here.

What to expect: A period of disruption to journeys, particularly on sections of the busway with some local temporary traffic/route adjustments and safety notices for pedestrians and cyclists who use the busway corridor. Council updates for exact dates and phasing will be available here.

East West Rail

East West Rail is a new railway linking people with jobs, schools, services and each other. It will open up new journeys, cut travel times, ease congestion on local roads and bring more opportunities within reach of people living locally, supporting sustainable economic growth and helping unlock the region’s potential as a global hub for life sciences and innovation.

It is expected that EWR trains will stop at the Cambridge South Train Station on Campus.
