Notice of Upcoming Infrastructure Works: November 2017 – May 2019

Please be advised that, from Monday 13 November 2017, there will be a temporary closure of the footpath and cycleway between the new Papworth Hospital and AstraZeneca’s Strategic R&D Centre and global Corporate HQ.

Circus and Piazza works plan

This closure is part of a phased programme of works starting in November to support the creation of the Circus and Piazza, a new public open space for the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
The infrastructure works have been scheduled to minimise disruption as far as possible but, to ensure the safety of the public and those working on the project, the footpath will be closed until May 2018, while the cycleway will not open until the works are fully completed in May 2019.

The plan overleaf shows the location and timings of the project, plus the diversion for pedestrians and cyclists during the works. This alternative route runs along Francis Crick Avenue and Robinson Way, which will reopen in both directions before the footpath and cycleway is closed.

About the works
Once open, the completed Circus and Piazza will offer vibrant green spaces for everyone on Cambridge Biomedical Campus to enjoy. Outdoor seating, high-quality landscaping and a public art installation by internationally-renowned artist, Ryan Gander, will ensure that these areas benefit the whole community.

New cycleways and footpaths will lead from the Circus and Piazza into open countryside. The works will also deliver an extension of the Cambridge Guided Bus (CGB) route from Francis Crick Avenue to Robinson Way.

The works needed to create this new public open space area will take place in two phases:

Phase one: November 2017 to May 2018
All the hard and soft landscaping work south of the new CGB route will be completed and work on the extension to the CGB will start. The whole area of these works will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists during this time.

Phase two: September 2018 to May 2019
All the hard and soft landscaping work north of the new CGB route will be completed, along with the delivery of the CGB extension to Robinson Way. During this phase, pedestrians will be able to use a new footpath but the cycleway and extension of the CGB will not open until the completion of the works in May 2019.

Opening of the Circus and Piazza: May 2019
The new public spaces will be open for the community to enjoy. Full access for pedestrians and cyclists will be restored, and the extension to the CGB will open.

These works are part of a substantial infrastructure improvements package and large investment by the developers of Cambridge Biomedical Campus to ensure that the Campus is an inspiring place to work, learn and innovate.

We are committed to delivering these improvements to the highest possible standard while minimising disruption for our community. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience the works may cause.
