Clinical Trials

Safety, reliability and innovation

With an average of 1000 active studies in progress at any time, high recruitment rates, dedicated clinical trial wards, access to key opinion leaders and a one-stop service for sponsors, Cambridge University Hospitals is one of the leading centres in the UK for clinical trials.

Advantages of conducting clinical trials at CUH

Sponsors undertaking clinical studies on the Biomedical Campus enjoy the following advantages:

1) High rates of patient recruitment

The Cambridge sub-region is home to a stable population of over 5 million people with a good track record of participation in clinical studies. Patient recruitment is facilitated by support at the national and regional level through clinical trial networks such as the West Anglia Comprehensive Local Research Network and the West Anglia Cancer Research Network (WACRN). The Cambridge BioResource is a resource of patients and healthy volunteers who are willing to be approached and invited to participate in local research studies investigating the links between genes, the environment and common diseases. Volunteers who join the Cambridge BioResource donate their DNA via a blood or saliva sample.

2) Safety, quality, reliability and innovation

Principal Investigators on the Campus are experienced in treating patients with both common and rare diseases and are renowned for their innovative approach to clinical research. They have access to a wide range of support for designing and implementing clinical trials as well as the interpretation of results particularly in the area of imaging, statistical analysis and pathology. In addition to the main hospital wards, studies are conducted in a well-equipped, purpose-built clinical trial facility embedded in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

3) Minimum administration

The R&D team offers a one-stop service for anyone undertaking clinical trials at Cambridge University Hospitals which means that ethical approvals, costs, contracts and administration are handled seamlessly by one office.

4) Speed

The R&D office is committed to providing fast approvals for commercially sponsored research projects after receiving a valid application.

5) Cost-effectiveness

Cambridge University Hospitals is committed to offering a cost-effective service whilst delivering the highest levels of quality and safety.
