Centuries of pioneering medical research
Cambridge academics are responsible for many of the breakthrough discoveries that underpin modern healthcare. In addition to a broad portfolio of licensing opportunities, their research has catalysed dozens of healthcare start-up companies. Today, building on decades of successful commercial collaborations, there is a keen interest in exploring new partnerships with industry.
In addition to investigating the underlying causes of disease, research on the Biomedical Campus is focused on the development of new methods of predicting, preventing, screening and diagnosing illness as well as novel methods of treating disease. There is a growing interest in e-medicine and tele-health including technologies that enable the remote monitoring of patients in their homes and in the community.
Focus on translational research
In 2006, a partnership between the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals was selected by the Government’s National Institute for Health Research as one of only 5 Biomedical Research Centres (BRC) in the UK. These Centres are leaders in scientific translation, receiving substantial levels of investment to transform fundamental biomedical research into clinical research that will benefit patients. They are also early adopters of new insights in technologies, techniques and treatments for improving health. Funding for the Cambridge BRC was renewed in 2011 for a further five years at a record level of £110 million.
Integrated delivery of care, research and education
